Hypnosis in Childbirth

Learning hypnosis for use in childbirth is a way to help you keep calm and relaxed
and manage pain during the birth.

There are a number of specialised hypnosis programmes available such as
HypnoBirthing (TM) and HypnoBabies (TM) and also individual hypnotherapists who will
work with you on a 1:1 basis using their own methods.

The hypnotherapist will usually hypnotise you first so you can experience what it is
like and then will teach you how to use self hypnosis so that you can use it during
the birth, You will also have some CDs that you can listen to leading up to the
birth, during it and afterwards. Some people will teach birth partners how to use
hypnosis as well so they can increase the depth of the hpynotic state if necessary.

One of the advantages of hypnosis is that you can create your own comfortable state
wherever you are. One of my clients had wanted a home birth and was upset when she found she wouldn't be able to. However, using self hypnosis she could create her
own environment that she felt belonged to her even in the busy hospital.

Another client who wanted a natural birth was able to reduce her anxiety over the possibility of having to have a C section and was able to feel comfortable whatever
the outcome was both before and during the birth.

Pain management is the factor that is important to most women and hypnosis gives a variety of techniques to use to reduce unwanted sensations and to take control over
them. Feeling more relaxed during the birth also means that there is less chance of tearing. The mother is also more likely to feel less tired and the birth may even
take less time.

The calmness of the mother during pregnancy, birth and afterwards has an impact on the calmness of her baby so using self hypnosis and listening to relaxation CDs during this time can increase feelings of calmness, peacefulness and also an ability to cope with the inevitable changes in life.

As well as addressing the birth itself, hypnosis can also help with anxiety around hospital procedures, fear of needles and concern over changes in changed emotions
during pregnancy.
